Felting workshop

What we will do

We’ll spend an afternoon caressing sheep — or more precisely, their fleeces! You’ll learn the basics of felting with raw wool. We’ll talk a bit about sheep, the differences between various types of wool, and their many possible uses. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your own small “veggy sheepskin” that you can use at home as a seat cushion or for decoration.

Where?

The Biostation Kreis Gütersloh/Bielefeld is giving us the opportunity to use their grounds. As these workshops are taking place in this format for the first time, things will be a bit experimental. The Biostation will provide tables, electricity, and water. Toilets are available on site, as well as facilities for changing clothes if desired. Food and drinks should be brought along by participants themselves. For a small donation, apple juice is also available at the Biostation.

If there is a group inquiry, the workshop can also take place at your location, provided you can offer suitable facilities. Feel free to get in touch with me to discuss the details!

What you need

Most importantly: don’t be afraid of nature and its products. We’ll be felting with raw wool, just as it comes from the sheep — including all that comes with it, like wonderful lanolin, but also bits of straw and the occasional leftover poop pellet. So feel free to bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. It will get warm, wet, and messy. But in the end, you’ll have a clean, fine piece of work in your hands! No prior experience is required — just a bit of patience and some strength.

You’re very welcome to bring your own sheep’s wool to work with directly. Please make sure to transport it in one piece, unwashed, and loosely packed so it can breathe.

Felting is a traditional craft.

In this workshop, we will practice wet felting — meaning the fibers are bonded using soap, hot water, and muscle power. However, felting only one side requires a specific technique. It’s not complicated, but it does call for a certain sensitivity and some patience. During the workshop, all questions are welcome; you’ll learn and practice your own technique and gather creative ideas along the way.
